Web addresses can be violent!

URLs (web addresses) can be violent. I always  notice when some well-known person like a radio or tv personality announces his or her web address, it can sound to someone else like an invitation to violence.

I am referring to the "slash" in URLs which are followed by the person's name, such that one reads it "FoxNews.com, slash O'Reilly" (or Hannity or ShepSmith) — as in "cut" (the person).

I often wonder whether the person announcing his web address doesn't have a silent and personal flinch when reading "slash" in front of his name. Does it give opponents an unwanted subliminal message? Does it stir up the more easily stirred up among us?

The Spanish language uses the term "diagonal" instead of "slash" and I prefer it by a longshot. "Univision punto com diagonal JorgeRamos" (univision.com/jorgeramos).

To Shelly --- I am so glad to know that I am not the only one with this thought! Lorna

I'm just glad when we as a culture became familiar enough with the internet to not feel the need to say "w w w" whenever telling somebody about a URL. Can't tell you how tiring that was to hear in the adverts on the radio every few minutes. Made me want to claw at the walls...

Hmm... interesting. I'd never actually thought about it but I guess it could make one cringe hearing it with their name attached.

I'm truly enjoying the design and layout of your site. It's a very easy on the eyes which makes it much more enjoyable
for me to come here and visit more often. Did you hire out a designer to create
your theme? Exceptional work!

DEar Lorna, like you, I find the word "diagonal" much less jarring. Your take on things always sets me thinking.

I hope all is well in your world. I've been away from blogging and posting most of the summer, but now I'm returning to favorite blogs and discovering that the bloggers I follow--like you--continue to be interesting and thought-provoking writers and thinkers. Thank you. Peace.
